THIRD ACTIVITY

This activity is...BUILDING YOUR OWN PAPER ROCKET

All description is in the worksheet

The basic principles behind rocketry are the same for a simple paper rocket as for space rockets. In this activity, the students will design and build their own paper rocket and use it to investigate some of the variables in the design that may affect the stability and performance of the rocket.

To help them, I give them some hints, for example a template for the fins and the front part and also that it is better ir they seal the front part before setting the cone.

They have to register all material used and when the rocket is finished they have to determine the centre of mass and the center of pressure, according to instructions giving in the worksheet.

The template for fins and cone at the front.

SECOND ACTIVITY

In the same lesson, after finishing the drawing, we watched the following video Women in Science: A History Of Women In Space

I asked them to take notes of the name of each woman name that appears and also a short description. Now, they realise that there are lot of women related to space...the way was not easy but we are growing up!

Here an example:

FIRST ACTIVITY

I was inspired in a scientix resource to design the first activity. This webinar Resource Detail - Scientix. At the beginning of the webinar, the woman engages audience with this activity; draw a scientific. As she says, it is expected they draw a man with a crazy hair, big glasses and white coat. It was like that…

I asked students to DRAW AN ASTRONOMER OR A PERSON THAT WORKS IN SOMETHING RELATED TO SCIENCE.

In a piece of paper, A5, they did it. I gave 15 minutes to them to do it.

Here are some examples.

Conclusion: as expected, most of them drew a man. Most of students that decided to draw something related to general science instead of astronomy did what the women in the webinar said...I have to say that there more women in the student's drawings than I expected, but as conclusion...The same than the stereotypes reflect...

Here are some examples

But others...

WARMING UP

First, I explain to students that we are involved in the World Space Week:

Then, before telling them the final product, we enjoyed the following video Airbus Foundation Discovery Space: Launching into space - YouTube
